School grades as we know them today have an interesting history. The evaluation system has evolved over centuries and changed according to societal needs.
The first forms of school evaluation appeared in the Middle Ages, when teachers evaluated students verbally. Numerical grades began to be used in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The five-point grade scale (1-5) has been used in Czech lands since the 19th century. This system has proven effective and, with minor modifications, is still used today.
