Czech Republic officially uses a five-point grading scale from 1 to 5. Plus and minus signs are only a voluntary extension that schools and teachers can set up on their own.
According to Czech education law, students are evaluated using these grades:
- 1 – excellent (výborný)
- 2 – commendable (chvalitebný)
- 3 – good (dobrý)
- 4 – sufficient (dostatečný)
- 5 – insufficient (nedostatečný)
The use of auxiliary marks plus (+) and minus (-) is not part of official evaluation and is not regulated by law.
Some schools and teachers extend the five-point scale with auxiliary marks (plus, minus) to differentiate more finely between student performance. These schools often state in their internal rules that "for motivational reasons, auxiliary marks plus or minus may be used with grades."
However, the use of these auxiliary marks is entirely at the discretion of the individual school or teacher. It's not a blanket rule and there is no nationwide registry of conversion tables.
It's key to understand that the conversion of grades like 2+ or 2- to numerical values (for example, 1.75 or 2.25) is not legally defined anywhere. Each school that uses auxiliary marks can set its own rules.
Some schools publish their conversion tables in the school rules or in "Evaluation Guidelines," while other schools don't publish this information at all. Conversion tables are therefore internal, voluntary, and may differ between schools and even between teachers.
If you need to know the exact conversion for a specific school, it's best to check directly with that school in their school rules or ask the teacher.
The following table shows one commonly used conversion method (steps of 0.25 points). However, please note that this is not an official standard and your school may use a different system:
| Grade | Possible Value |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1,0 |
| 1- | 1,25 |
| 2+ | 1,75 |
| 2 | 2,0 |
| 2- | 2,25 |
| 3+ | 2,75 |
| 3 | 3,0 |
| 3- | 3,25 |
| 4+ | 3,75 |
| 4 | 4,0 |
| 4- | 4,25 |
| 5+ | 4,75 |
| 5 | 5,0 |
This table is illustrative only. Your teacher or school may use different values or not convert grades to numbers at all.
Some schools use only minus intermediate steps (1−, 2−, 3−, 4−) and work with a step of 0.5 points.
The following table shows a typical example of a half-point conversion table, where 0.5 points are added to the base grade with a minus.
| Grade | Possible Value |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1,0 |
| 1- | 1,5 |
| 2 | 2,0 |
| 2- | 2,5 |
| 3 | 3,0 |
| 3- | 3,5 |
| 4 | 4,0 |
| 4- | 4,5 |
| 5 | 5,0 |
The half-point system is also just one possible approach. What matters is what values your school actually uses.
