Czech Grade Boundaries: When Do You Get 5, 4, 3, or 2?

Table of averages for individual grades and rules for failing. Find out what average means which grade.

Wondering at what average you get a 5 (fail) or what average is enough for a 2? Here's a clear table of boundaries for individual grades and rules for failing.

Standard average boundaries for individual grades are:

  • 1Grade 1 (excellent): average up to 1.50
  • 2Grade 2 (commendable): average 1.51 - 2.50
  • 3Grade 3 (good): average 2.51 - 3.50
  • 4Grade 4 (sufficient): average 3.51 - 4.50
  • 5Grade 5 (insufficient): average above 4.50

Note: These boundaries are approximate. Each school and teacher may have slightly different rounding boundaries.

A student fails a subject if they have grade 5 (insufficient) on the report card. With two or more 5s, the student usually doesn't advance to the next year. Specific rules may vary by school.

If you're at risk of getting a 5, talk to the teacher as soon as possible. Most teachers are willing to offer makeup tests or assignments if they see the student is trying.
